A hyperactive sunspot has just sent a giant X-class solar flare into space

A rapidly erupting sunspot just hurled a huge flare.

The hotbed of solar activity, officially known as AR2975, emitted a strong X-class flare that has already caused a temporary blackout of shortwave radio signals in America, according to SpaceWeather.com. (AR2975 has already burped more than 17 medium-sized flares over the past few days, but this flare is a bit stronger.)
