Developer Unknown Worlds has all but confirmed that a new Subnautica game is in development. The aquatic survival game was released in 2014 and received a sequel in 2021 with Subnautica: Below Zero. It now appears that the series will be getting a third installment, or at least a spin-off, based on a Senior Narrative Designer job ad on the Unknown Worlds website.
“Unknown Worlds is seeking a Senior Narrative Designer to join the team working on the next game set in the Subnautica universe,” the job description reads. “This person will work closely with the team to tell compelling, dramatic stories in the context of the game experience while defining the history and lore of a new sci-fi world and its alien denizens. This individual has a unique opportunity to join the team early in development and help set the narrative direction for a beloved franchise.”
The wording of the job description is quite interesting due to the use of the term “subnautica universe”. It suggests that while the game is connected to Subnautica, it might not be a direct sequel, or might even be the same genre. Additionally, “defining the history and lore of a new sci-fi world and its alien inhabitants” means the game will be based on an entirely new planet with its own native species and environments.
The developer hasn’t made an official statement about this game – the only evidence that development has started is this job posting. Considering that Unknown Worlds is still hiring resources for the project, you can bet it will be a while before we get any official information about it.
Earlier this year, Subnautica: Below Zero author Brittney M. Morris left Unknown Worlds to join Insomniac Games and work on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Morris already had some experience with Spider-Man lore, having written the Miles Morales prequel novel Wings of Fury. The novel revolves around Vulture’s daughter Starling, a new Vulture in the making. It also explores Miles’ grief over the loss of his father and adjusting to a world with new powers and responsibilities.
