One of Apex Legends’ least played and poorly tuned legends, Rampart could be getting a significant buff, according to a recent leak.
among all Apex Legends‘ playable characters, Rampart has always struggled to establish relevance. The Legend started out in an undertuned state and since then no changes have convinced Apex Legends Player to give Rampart another chance. That all changed briefly last week when Rampart received a sudden buff, but it was quickly reversed. A bigger change for Rampart could be yet to come, however, if a new one Apex Legends Leak is to be believed.
Apex Legends Leaker Shrugtal shared details on a buff for Rampart, or more specifically her Amped Cover tactical ability, which “didn’t make the final cut” for the battle royale’s latest update. Whether it would make Rampart as capable as their peers in Apex Legends is a whole different matter. It would at least greatly increase her Amped Cover ability, to a point where she would be dramatically more useful in combat.
As part of the delayed changes, two key areas will be changed for the Amped Cover tactical ability. The first is the simplest and most important. Initial building health for Amped Cover is boosted from just 40 to 120. Amped Cover builds health over time, making it vulnerable to destruction if attacked immediately after deployment. However, this counterplay was too strong, especially when using Amped Cover in combat. The health change should make Amped Cover more usable in action.
The three remaining changes all focus on another important aspect of Amped Cover, which is how quickly the device deploys. Upper arm shield delay is reduced from 0.25s to 0.1s, frontal armor deployment time is reduced from 0.5s to 0.3s, and deployment delay is reduced from 0.5s to 0.3s. While no single change will necessarily feel like a big change for Rampart players, the entire device as a whole will be deployed significantly faster than before.
Respawn’s intent should be obvious from these four changes. It wants Rampart to be ready to fight faster, whether it’s in battle or preparing for battle. Additionally, when Rampart comes under fire, it wants Amped Cover to be usable as a quick defense mechanism.
Why the rampart changes weren’t added to the game in the last patch isn’t clear. Maybe the changes need more time to test before going live, or maybe the changes were deemed too strong and need a little more tuning. The changes could come through in the next patch, but even if it doesn’t, Rampart fans will be clamoring for Respawn to perform buffs they’ve been waiting for way too long.
Apex Legends is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
