Moenchengladbach We wanted to know: Which jersey Borussia Mönchengladbach has worn in the 21st century is the most beautiful? 48 outfits could be rated. Here are the results – with clear trends.
Borussia Mönchengladbach only wore several jerseys once. In 2005, an all-black outfit was supposed to bring good luck in the relegation battle at Hamburger SV. Anyone who remembers that time knows that a 0-0 away draw was considered a success. In 2020, Borussia also celebrated their 120th anniversary in a black jersey and landed their first win against RB Leipzig with a 1-0 win. The Gladbach team has only worn the most successful and – according to the result of a voting on RP ONLINE – the most beautiful jersey of the 21st century: on May 14th in the 5-1 win in the last game of the season against TSG Hoffenheim. With an average score of 1.74, Puma’s new home outfit is clearly ahead in the vote.
The optimal number of points will eventually be a thing of the past, optically Borussia has apparently landed a direct hit with the design based on the 70s. With a black and green vertical stripe, the foals shot 7:1 out of the stadium in the 1971 Inter Milan “can throw game”. In the present, it has moved from the left breast to the middle and is interrupted there by the lettering of the main sponsor Flatex. The no-frills look is popular and appears to be timeless.
There was a choice of 48 jerseys from the 21st century, and users were able to assign school grades. The overall average is 2.99 and it is noticeable that the jerseys of the recent past are doing better. Only in 15th place is one from before the relegation in 2011. Interestingly, it is a similar design as for next season, only the black and green vertical stripe ran over the left breast after the relegation in 2008 as it did in the successful 70s .
On average, home shirts (2.8) perform better than all other shirts, i.e. away, third or European Cup shirts (3.1). The worst are the blue third jerseys from the years 2007 to 2009 and 2009 to 2011 – with a 3.93 they share 47th place. The third blue jersey from the 2019/20 season is also only in 39th place. And of all the home kits up for grabs, the inaugural Kappa outfit from the 2013/14 season with the horizontal pinstripes gets the lowest rating – a 3.73 grade and third from bottom.
Is the recent past optically transfigured? Do sporting successes make a jersey come off better on average? That’s hard to pinpoint, but what’s certain is that since Puma’s return in 2018 – despite some not-so-high-rated outfits – Puma has achieved a decent average of 2.63 across 13 kits in total. The black away (with Flatex lettering) and European Cup jersey (with Degiro lettering) from 2020/21 came in second. Third place is shared by the 2018/19 home jersey (a homage to the last championship season) and the 2020 anniversary jersey. The most beautiful Kappa jersey is therefore the 2014/15 jersey, also based on the 70s.
This is probably the essence of the voting results: retro designs or jerseys that are as dark as possible usually do best. On Friday, Footy Headlines site leaked the new away kit – it’s actually dark.
