Eight suspects have been charged by a French court over allegations that two 13-year-old girls were lured via social media, locked in a basement and gang-raped, with some of the abuse also being filmed.
The gang rapes of the two young teenagers are said to have taken place in late October 2020, when the teenagers were lured to Paris and then to the Paris suburb of Sarcelles via the social media platform Snapchat.
The couple got into a vehicle in which one of the girls was being sexually assaulted before being locked in a basement where the suspects allegedly took turns raping and sexually abusing the two children, reports French broadcaster BFMTV.

Some of the abuse is said to have been recorded on video before the two 13-year-olds were able to escape through a window from the basement the day after the kidnapping.
After escaping, the two girls were able to report the incident to the police, who, through forensic examination of the victims, discovered seven different male genetic profiles and were able to identify and arrest the suspects from November 2020 to February of this year.
The eight arrested suspects have claimed that the sex with the two girls was consensual and that they believed the girls were at least 16 or 17 years old at the time of the incident.
One of the young men, a 19-year-old, was denied an application for release after 15 months in custody and has been convicted of six offenses in the past, including violent robbery. He was also previously shot in the head in a drug deal in a count of attempted murder.

Five of the suspects, believed to be in their 20s, are currently in custody while two others have been placed under judicial supervision. If convicted, they face up to twenty years in prison.
The charges come just months after French police arrested a suspected radical Islamist extremist accused of kidnapping a 15-year-old Iraqi girl and raping her at her home for several days.
The girl was rescued by a neighbor of the man, who claimed the teenager also showed signs of being physically abused and strangled.
