Five young migrant children abandoned on Texas bank of Border River, one injured

Agents from the Del Rio Sector Border Patrol found five unaccompanied migrant children along the Texas side of the Rio Grande. One of the children, a six-year-old boy, suffered an injury while crossing the river alone.

Sector Del Rio chief patrol agent Jason D. Owens tweeted photos of four unaccompanied migrant children found by agents on the Texas side of the Mexico-Mexico border. The children were between one and six years old.

Chief Owens expressed frustration at the cruelty of smugglers, who take children across the river with no family members present. “It’s dangerous,” he said. “That’s wrong. That’s tragic.”

In another tweet, Owens reported that an unaccompanied boy was injured trying to cross the Rio Grande. An agent jumped into the river to save the six-year-old boy.

Agents bandaged the child’s wounds and took him to a local hospital for treatment.

“Many of our agents are volunteering to become paramedics just to help others in that way,” the boss said.

The crossing of unaccompanied migrant children in the Del Rio sector occurs regularly.

In March, agents found a five-year-old boy along the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas, Breitbart Texas reported. Two weeks earlier, agents found an abandoned toddler wandering alone along the banks of the Rio Grande in 30-degree weather. The kid only had a sweatshirt hoodie to keep him warm.

The crossing of unaccompanied migrant children along the Texas-Mexico border is dangerous and can result in the above injuries or even death.

In mid-March, agents found the body of a four-year-old child who had been snatched from his mother’s arms as she crossed the Rio Grande’s fast-moving currents.

Unfortunately, agents are getting used to finding young children abandoned by people smugglers — and not just in Texas. As Breitbart reported, two small children with a migration background were found on the banks of the Rio Grande in early February. In March, Tucson Sector agents found a five-year-old girl traveling with a large group of migrants along the Arizona-Mexico border.

In the first five months of this fiscal year, which began Oct. 1, 2021, agents found nearly 60,000 unaccompanied minors, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection report. This corresponds to an increase of over 100 percent compared to the same period last year.
