Kamisato Ayato, the Yashiro Commissioner and Ayaka’s brother, is out in Genshin Impact now. Hydro and a Swordtail, Ayato’s damage is nothing to sneeze at. Where he stacks in the damage meta (compared to Hu Tao and Ayaka) is currently unknown, but he could easily become the centerpiece of your Freeze team. Here’s everything you need to know about Kamisato Ayato’s abilities, artifacts, and more.
capabilities
Normal Attack (Kamisato Art: Marobashi)
- Perform up to 5 quick punches.
Elemental Ability (Kamisato Type: Kyouka)
- the tl;dr version since the official description is quite long:
- Ayato leaves behind a watery illusion that explodes when enemies are nearby, dealing AoE Hydro dmg.
- This Kyouka ability also converts his basic attacks into AoE hydro damage. He also gains a buff called Namisen Effect (max four stacks) that increases his damage based on his current max HP.
- the Entire description from Mihoyo:
- Kamisato Ayato switches positions and enters the Takimeguri-Kanka state.
After this shift, he leaves a watery illusion in his original location. Once formed, the watery illusion explodes when enemies are nearby or when its duration ends, dealing AoE Hydro damage. - Takimeguri Kanka: In this state, Kamisato Ayato uses his Shunsuiken to perform blindingly fast attacks, converting his basic attack damage into AoE Hydro dmg. This cannot be overwritten. It also has the following properties:
- After a Shunsuiken attack hits an opponent, it grants Ayato the Namisen effect, increasing the damage dealt by Shunsuiken based on Ayato’s current Max HP. The initial maximum number of Namisen stacks is four, and one stack can be gained from Shunsuiken every 0.1 seconds. This effect is dispelled when Takimeguri Kanka ends.
- Kamisato Ayato’s resistance to interrupts is increased.
- Charged or dashing attacks cannot be used.
- Takimeguri Kanka is erased when Ayato leaves the field. Using Kyouka again while in this state will reset and replace the previously existing state.
- Kamisato Ayato switches positions and enters the Takimeguri-Kanka state.
Elemental Burst (Kamisato Art: Suiyuu)
- As long as this room exists, Bloomwater Blades will constantly rain down and attack enemies within its AoE, dealing Hydro damage and increasing the basic attack damage of characters within it.
1. Ascension Passive (Kamisato Art: Mine Wo Matoishi Kiyotaki):
- Once Kyouka triggers, Ayato automatically gains two stacks of Namisen.
- When the Water Illusion explodes, Ayato gains the maximum number of Namisen stacks possible.
4. Ascension Passive (Kamisato Art: Michiyuku Hagetsu):
- When Ayato is not on the field and his energy is below 40, he regenerates two energy to himself every second.
Main stats and sub-stats of artifacts
Here we give advice for building Ayato as a DPS.
Building ATK, Crit and Crit Dmg% is important for any DPS. The basic rule is to get 70% ATK, 50% Crit min and 100% Crit Dmg% minimum. The ideal ratio between Crit% and Crit Dmg% is 1:2. The individual character’s weapon and base Crit% and Crit Dmg% should also be considered when maintaining the ratio. (Full credits to Genshin Resources and NGA for compiling and testing the optimized damage performance.)
In addition to ATK, Crit, and Crit Dmg% in Substats, getting HP Substats isn’t bad either. Ayato’s damage from Namisen stacks scales with his maximum HP. With all this information in mind, here is the recommended artifact setup.

Suggested main statistics |
Suggested Substats |
flower |
HP (no choice here – all flower artifacts are HP main stats) |
Crit/Crit Dmg%, ATK%, HP% / EM |
feather |
Flat ATK (no choice here – all feather artifacts are Flat ATK main stats) |
Crit/Crit Dmg%, ATK%, HP% / EM |
sand |
ATK% |
Crit/Crit Dmg%, HP% / EM |
chalice |
ATK % / Hydro Bonus Dmg % |
Crit/Crit Dmg%, HP% / EM |
Ripe |
Crit/Crit Dmg% |
ATK%, HP% / EM |
So here’s the boring section that describes the exact numbers: Getting to 100% crit is pretty tough, so aiming for 70% crit is reasonable. This means that at a 1:2 ratio you should be stacking around 140% Crit Dmg %.
Ayato’s level-ups increase his Crit Dmg%, which is nice. At level 90, Ayato already has +88.4% Crit Dmg%. The math then matches ~50% Crit Dmg from other sources. Which weapon you equip and whether it offers a Crit% or Crit Dmg% boost will determine which main stat your Circlet should focus on.

weapon
Yes, Mihoyo wants you to get the 5-star Haran Geppaku Futsu (increases Crit%) specially made for Ayato. But it’s expensive, and even on a good day, it’s difficult to get what you want from the gun banner. If you happen to have another five star weapon, the Jade Cutter (increases Crit%), that’s great for Ayato too.
So a decent four-star substitute is The Black Sword (increases Crit%). It increases normal and charged attack damage by 20-40%. You can get The Black Sword from the Battle Pass, so it’s not strictly an F2P option.
team comp
I think Freeze team comps are the way to go since Freeze is such a powerful elemental reaction. Apart from that – please experiment! Vape looks promising, and Yun Jin’s ATK boosting abilities may also seem to have some synergy with Ayato. I haven’t managed these teams with Ayato before, so I can’t vouch 100% for their effectiveness.

But here’s an example of freeze comp teams that I think will do very well:
- 5-Star Version: Ayato, Kokomi, Kazuha, and Ayaka
- Budget version: Ayato, Barbara, Sucrose and Rosaria
As we always say, you can use any character to create the content in Genshin. So if you want him, draw for him! However, if you are unsure, there is no harm in waiting. Finally, five-star characters always get replay banners.
