More than 40 degrees possible: when and where it will be particularly hot this week
During the heat expected for this week, the 40-degree mark can be exceeded locally in Germany. This was confirmed by the German Weather Service (DWD) in a message and the meteorologist Britta Siebert-Sperl from the weather service “Wetterkontor” to the editorial network Germany (RND). Monday, July 18: The high-pressure area “Jürgen” is gradually withdrawing. “At the same time, low-pressure areas over the Atlantic off the French coast are causing the heat to flow in,” explains the expert. The heat wave then spreads to the UK via Spain, France. “In France, around 40 degrees are already being reached. It’s not that hot here on Monday,” says Siebert-Sperl.

On the coasts, the temperature rises to about 23 and 28 degrees. In the north German lowlands, the values go even higher to 30 to 33 degrees, in the north-east the maximum temperature is 23 to 31 degrees. “It will be significantly hotter in the west and south-west,” says the meteorologist. Temperatures of 30 to 36 degrees are reached on the Moselle, Main, Rhine, Upper Rhine, Neckar and Lake Constance. “Maybe even 37 degrees,” says Siebert-Sperl.

Tuesday, July 19: “Tuesday will be the heat peak,” emphasizes the meteorologist. Around 40 degrees are possible on the Rhine and Lower Rhine, on the Moselle, in the Rhine-Neckar area, in the Rhine-Main area and in the direction of Karlsruhe. Peak temperatures of 37 degrees are expected in Breisgau and Lake Constance. This is also the case in the Ruhr area and Münsterland. In the east and northeast, the values climb to 27 to 35 degrees. Peak temperatures of 32 to 34 degrees are expected in the northwest and southeast. “It’s getting hotter everywhere. Let’s see if it goes up to 41 or even 42 degrees,” says Siebert-Sperl. “But even if not, it’s more than hot enough.”

Wednesday, July 20: Wednesday will also remain hot, but the temperatures will probably not be quite as high as the day before. “Our model calculates peak values of around 35 degrees in the Koblenz area and around Ludwigshafen and Karlsruhe,” explains Siebert-Sperl. Otherwise it will be midsummer warm with temperatures of 26 to 34 degrees. It can also get warmer than 30 degrees again on the coasts. The first clouds, showers or thunderstorms can be felt again over the western half of Germany.
Thursday, July 21: “The tipping point comes on Thursday,” she predicts. The risk of showers and thunderstorms is now increasing in the entire western half between the North Sea and Rhineland-Palatinate. The thunderstorms can sometimes be more violent. “Unfortunately, more precise predictions are not yet possible. When it rains and thunderstorms, the weather maps still fluctuate a lot,” says the meteorologist. Temperatures will drop slightly compared to the day before.

In the following days the midsummer temperatures will remain in Germany. Although values of 40 degrees are no longer reached, the maximum temperatures can still be between 25 and 34 degrees. “There will be no drop in temperature,” says Siebert-Sperl. Occasional showers and thunderstorms are possible. Cooling is not expected until the following week.
