‘I wasn’t that scared’: Teen in wild tornado truck video speaks out about death

The teenage driver of a truck that went right through the funnel of a ferocious tornado in Elgin, Texas and was thrown into the air in horrific footage said he was shocked but not scared.

Riley Leon, 16, was driving home on Monday when he was narrowly confronted with death. His truck, a red 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, got caught up in a destructive tornado.

Within seconds, the lone truck was tossed onto its side on the freeway and spun several times while the teenager was still on its wheels, before somehow being flung back onto its four wheels by the winds that littered the derby sky.

Amazingly, Mr Leon was able to drive away unharmed after the 10-second ordeal, which he described as a blessing to get through another day in an interview with ABC’s “Good morning America.”

“I wasn’t very scared, but it was a shocking moment for me,” he said. “Like a carnival game, the ones that turn you over. It was fast. I didn’t feel anything because it was like a blink of an eye.”

The incident, which was widely shared on social media, was caught by Storm Chaser Brian Emfinger, who watched it from across the freeway.

The tornado engulfed the truck shortly after wreaking havoc at a trailer community across the street, destroying a trailer and power line and injuring one.

“I am grateful to God for giving me another chance in this world,” Mr Leon said in the video. “He probably left me here because something special was coming my way.”

The teenager came back from an interview and called his friend and told him, “I got the job! Everything went well.”

“Out of nowhere, the tornado came and got me,” he said. “I knew there was going to be bad weather, but I never expected the tornado to be at the same moment as me. There was a ditch and he took me there and then he led me onto the road and there I spun the truck.”

He said he had a few scratches on his arms when he got out to check out the damage to his truck. He said it has a lot of scratches and dents but it’s something he can fix.

The tornado that devastated Elgin was part of a larger tornado outbreak that struck Texas and other southern states, causing widespread damage. At least one person died in New Orleans and a dozen were injured when about 66 tornado warnings were issued Monday through Tuesday.

After the storm, images showed collapsed buildings, collapsed roofs, trees and overturned cars.
