- JoJo Siwa has left the film adaptation of the young adult novel “Bounce”.
- The social media star said the project was put on hold and then disappeared
- She also clarified that her departure had nothing to do with Will Smith
JoJo Siwa has left the planned film adaptation of Megan Shull’s popular young adult book, Bounce.
The 18-year-old dancer and digital sensation severed ties with the project, saying it wasn’t meant for her.
“The project was shelved and then walked away. It wasn’t the one,” Siwa told Variety exclusively at Saturday’s GLAAD Media Awards.
Despite the timing of the news, Siwa’s decision to leave the project had nothing to do with Will Smith’s involvement in the film. The actor and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith reportedly produced the film, along with Jada’s brother Caleeb Pinkett.
Everyone is still talking about the Hollywood couple after Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock at the televised 94th Academy Awards on March 27 for a joke about Jada’s baldness.
Sources familiar with the project told Variety that Paramount Pictures removed the film from its development roster because it fell apart months ago.
During her interview with Variety over the weekend, Siwa didn’t hesitate to clarify that her departure from the film had nothing to do with the controversial assault on the Oscars.
“I usually stay out of politics, it’s not my job. But I will say that it is very important to be kind to each other. I think it can go both ways, kindness,” she added.
The project made internet waves in June 2021 when Siwa revealed the script included a kissing scene between her and a male co-star.
The openly pansexual Dance Moms graduate, who was in a relationship with then-girlfriend Kylie Prew at the time, said she didn’t want to do the scene and asked for it to be removed.
“I’m madly in love and don’t want to kiss anyone else. Mainly because it’s a man. I’m not about it. I’m trying to do it badly,” she told Entertainment Weekly at the time.
Siwa’s request was accepted by the studio as a story update revealed the kissing scene was removed.
But in November last year, Siwa shocked fans when she confirmed to People that she and Prew had split.
