As part of Rust’s promised monthly updates throughout 2022, the survival game will add a new rail network and a series of zip lines on April 7th. While the first update will only add the railroad tracks, later coming the actual trains, the zip lines will be fully functional and will be added alongside the power lines that already stretch across the map.
The rails update is just the first part of Rust’s plans for a fully procedural rail network that will add railroad tracks to any map size 4250 or larger. The tracks were meant to appear in a single loop that traverses the island, but developer Facepunch has asked players to keep an eye out for “odd looking areas you may encounter” and report them. In a press release, the developer said players can expect “roadworthy trains” in the game “in the near future.”
The other big addition coming with the April update are ziplines, which are added as a new feature to the game’s existing power lines and utility poles. New platforms have been added to the towers that players can climb on to access the ziplines and get to other platforms or to nearby monuments.
The ziplining mechanic allows players to speed up their journey by holding forward, or exit at any time with the jump button. Players using a zipline must watch out for obstacles such as trees, other players, and vehicles that will cause them to be thrown off the line. Facepunch has said that future improvements are planned for the zipline networks, with plans to connect them to more monuments and potentially allow players to place their own ziplines in the future.
Along with these big additions, the new update comes with a number of quality of life improvements and fixes, including new achievements, improved monument lighting, and other minor changes. The full list of updates will be available on the Rust Blog once the update is released on April 7th at 12:00 PM ET.
