Warhammer 40,000 is getting a new Squats army in 2022, and the first model has been revealed to tease the faction. Details are scarce at this point, but a full reveal of The Leagues of Votann is promised in a few months.
While the Squats (aka “Kin”) have been teased as an April Fool’s joke, it turns out that’s no joke – Games Workshop really is is Development of a complete faction for Warhammer 40K. That means we can expect a code and a force that the Warhammer community describes as fueled by “ancient technology…including some notorious advances that the Empire would find utterly heretical.” Once in the wild, it’s possible that we’ll also see The Leagues of Votann in some of the best board games of the likes of Kill Team or Warhammer Quest.
Since Squats are a sci-fi take on fantasy dwarves of the Tolkien variety, their affinity for invention isn’t all that surprising. In the 40K universe, this is justified as a holdover from mankind’s golden age before the galactic civil war (with the Horus Heresy also getting a remake in 2022). In fact, the Leagues of Votann are an offshoot of humanity that was “long lost” until now, and they are bringing back humanity’s forgotten technology.
From the only model shown so far, the Leagues of Votann appear to be heavily armored and armed as a result. For example, the soldier in question had cybernetic enhancements on his eye and feet, so this could be a way of customizing individuals within your unit with specific bonuses.
However, don’t think that humanity’s cousins make them allies of the Empire. The press release describes them as having “an uneasy relationship with the Empire of Mankind.” So they’re fine if you want to use them to beat the Space Marines fill.
While we’ve gotten a few squat miniatures for the likes of Necromunda in recent years, there hasn’t been a full army in decades. In-universe, this was justified by squat homeworlds being consumed by tyranid sticks (thereby making nomads out of the rest). However, with the introduction of The Leagues of Votann, it appears that was not the case Everyone extinguished. We’ll have to wait and see how they differ from what was previously on shelves, but it seems like this is an entirely new group.
