Swimming World Championships – Florian Wellbrock crawls over 800 meters to silver

As of: 06/21/2022 8:42 p.m

Florian Wellbrock won the silver medal in the 800 meter freestyle at the swimming world championships. There was a world record in the 200 meter butterfly.

In a dramatic final sprint, Wellbrock was only just beaten by American Bobby Finke (7:39.36 minutes). Ukraine’s Mikhailo Romanchuk secured bronze.

Wellbrock had been in third or fourth place in the field for a long time before finally turning up the heat. With his time of 7:39,:63 it wasn’t quite enough for gold. After all, he improved the German record.

“In the first one, I was actually angry that I lost gold. But I’m super happy with the German record, it’s never worked out so well over the 800 meters as it does today.”said Wellbrock.

Third World Cup medal for German team

After silver for Lukas Märtens over 400 meters freestyle and for Anna Elendt over 100 meters breaststroke, it was the third medal for the German pool team at this World Championships. The last time there was so much precious metal was in 2015.

For open water Olympic champion Wellbrock it was the first medal at world championships or Olympic Games in the 800 meter distance. Born in Bremen, who trains in Magdeburg, he won gold over 1,500 meters in the pool and ten kilometers in open water at the last World Championships.

Gose in 8th place, Matzerath in 6th place

Immediately afterwards, Isabel Gose was eighth in the 200-meter freestyle. As expected, the 20-year-old long-distance specialist was unable to take part in the fight for the medals and clocked in after 1:57.38 minutes. Yang Junxuan of China secured the title in 1:54.92 minutes. Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan took silver, bronze went to Tang Muhan of China.

Meanwhile, Lucas Matzerath missed the next surprise medal for the German team. The 22-year-old swam 50 meters breaststroke in sixth place. The title went to Nic Fink from the USA. Italian Nicolo Martinenghi secured silver ahead of American Michael Andrew. Matzerath was 38 hundredths of a second short of bronze.

World record in the 200m butterfly

Kristof Milak set a world record in the 200m butterfly. The Hungarian needed 1:50.73 minutes for the four lanes and was thus 39 hundredths of a second faster than his old record, whereupon his compatriots celebrated standing in the Budapest Arena.

Frenchman Leon Marchand (1:53.37 minutes) secured silver by a wide margin, bronze went to Tomoru Honda from Japan (1:53.61 minutes)

At the end of the day, the German mixed medley relay over 4×100 meters took eighth place. Ole Braunschweig, Anna Elend, Angelina Koehler and Rafael Miroslaw swam a time of 3:46.64 minutes and were 7.85 seconds behind the victorious US quartet.

Water polo players start with defeat

After a historic bankruptcy, the German water polo players are threatened with an early end. The team of the new national coach Petar Porobic lost in the first round game with 11:12 (2:5, 2:3, 2:3, 5:1) against Japan. It was the first defeat in the twelfth duel with the Asians.

The Montenegrin Porobic had nominated nine debutants because many top performers Julian Real, Dennis Eidner or Tobias Preuss had resigned. In addition, Berlin’s Marko Stamm and Mateo Cuk are injured. There are only four players left of the team that reached the World Cup quarter-finals under Stamm three years ago.

Victories against the other opponents are utopian: On Thursday (6 p.m.) the DSV selection will meet two-time world champion Croatia, on Saturday (7.30 p.m.) on Olympic silver medalist Greece.

No medals on Wednesday

There will definitely be no precious metal for Germany on Wednesday. No DSV athlete could qualify for the finals.

Synchronized swimmer Marlene Bojer, on the other hand, is in the final for the third time in these title fights. In the solo competition of the free program, she is fighting for the confirmation of this result as a tenth in the pre-competition.
