Trump is suing Hillary Clinton and the Democrats for attempting to rig the 2016 election by associating his campaign with Russia

Donald Trump has sued Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, claiming they tried to rig the 2016 election by associating the former president’s campaign with Russia.

Reuters reported on the lawsuit on Thursday.

“The defendants acted in concert and maliciously conspired to weave a false narrative that their Republican opponent, Donald J. Trump, was conspiring with a hostile foreign sovereignty,” Mr. Trump alleged in the lawsuit filed in Florida federal court.

Mr Trump beat Mrs Clinton in the 2016 election and took office in 2017. He claims she and other Democrats are guilty of “extortion” and a “conspiracy to commit harmful falsehoods.”

However, Mr Trump’s claims contrast with a report released by the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2020, when the chamber was controlled by Republicans.

The 966-page report found that Russia used Republican lobbyist Paul Manafort and the Wikileaks website to try to help Mr Trump in the 2016 election.

Mr. Manafort served as Trump campaign chairman and had deep ties to Russian oligarchs. In this capacity he was also active on the pro-Russian side of Ukrainian politics. He worked for the 2016 Trump campaign for five months.

While Moscow denies any involvement in the election interference, Russia’s efforts were detailed in the report compiled by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose investigation lasted two years.

Mr. Trump is seeking compensatory and punitive damages in the lawsuit against Mrs. Clinton and her Democrats.

He alleges that he was “obligated to incur costs in an amount to be determined in court but known to exceed twenty-four million dollars ($24,000,000) and continue to accrue in the form of defense costs, attorneys’ fees and incidental expenses.”

Other defendants in the lawsuit include the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Biden national security adviser Jake Sullivan, former DNC chair and current Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Bill Clinton’s chief of staff, Obama adviser and Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta. including former FBI Director James Comey and former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

“In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton and her cohorts orchestrated an unthinkable conspiracy — a conspiracy-shaking conspiracy and an affront to this nation’s democracy,” the lawsuit states.

“The actions being taken to further their plan — fabricating evidence, deceiving law enforcement, and exploiting access to highly sensitive data sources — are so outrageous, subversive, and inflammatory that even the events of Watergate pale in comparison,” Trump asserts in the legal Submission.

“Under the guise of ‘opposition research’, ‘data analysis’ and other political strategies, the defendants nefariously attempted to shake public confidence,” the legal team adds in the 108-page document. “They worked together with a single, self-serving purpose: to defame Donald J. Trump. In fact, their far-reaching conspiracy was designed to paralyze Trump’s presidential bid by fabricating a scandal that would be used to spark a baseless federal investigation and ignite a media frenzy.”

Mr Trump’s former personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, falsely claimed that it was Ukraine that interfered in the 2016 election in support of Hillary Clinton.
