75,000 “Metalheads” are expected in Schleswig-Holstein this year Festival Wacken Open Air 2022 has been sold out for a long time. “All signs are green and we are going full throttle in planning,” said festival co-founder Thomas Jensen in an interview with the “Deutsche Presse-Agentur”. The fans have some catching up to do, but: “The spirit has not suffered.”
The festival acts with more than 150 concerts and supporting program include bands such as Judas Priest, Avantasia, Powerwolf and Limp Bizkit, as well as Hämatom, Slime and In Extremo. Slipknot will be there for the first time. And also the North German one Hip hop artist Alligatoah will be there.
W:O:A 2022: Organizers expect 75,000 metal fans
For the three-day festival, for example, the capacities of the campsites have to be defined during construction. The same applies to the access routes for the approximately 62 trailers with more than 1,100 tons of material for the stages and everything around them. The famous Wacken skull alone weighs 2.5 tons.
The stages measure around 132 meters wide, 27 meters deep and – including the skull – 28 meters high. The power output required at the last major festivals before the pandemic was around twelve megawatts – this corresponds to the needs of a small town with 70,000 inhabitants.
Wacken: Festival of extremes on the cow pasture
As a long-time head of stage construction puts it: Wacken is the festival of extremes: “You have water in your underpants from the rain – or you have water in your underpants from sweating”. Cow pasture meets metal bands and fans, the traditional brass band meets metal music, extreme heat follows heavy rain and then tents floating away in the mud. In some years, rubber boots are one of the most important accessories at the festival, as many of the world’s visitors know from experience since the Heavy Metal Open Air was founded in August 1990.
Thomas Jensen: “We’ll do everything we can to make it the party of the year”
“We’ll do everything we can to make it the party of the year – but even that’s not really enough,” promises Jensen for the coming edition. Nevertheless, the organizers would have to deal with the consequences of the pandemic. “I am very happy that I meet many well-known names at meetings,” said Thomas Jensen in the “DPA” interview.
More than 95 percent of the fans had exchanged their tickets for the 2022 edition of the festival, which was canceled last year due to the corona pandemic. According to the organizer, the rest of the 75,000 tickets were raffled off via a waiting list. Some of the bands originally planned for 2020 have canceled for various reasons.
Cancellation by Rammstein singer Till Lindemann because of his own tour
Among them Rammstein singer Till Lindemann with his solo project: The musician is himself Rammstein and their new album “Zeit” – repeatedly at the top of the album charts for weeks – on tour. Jensen is happy about the loyalty of the fans to the event, who would have stood by the festival for two years. “We are him Fans owe a huge thank you.”
