Will Smith has been banned from Oscars for 10 years by the Academy

“Today, the Board of Governors called a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation,” the letter continued. “The Board has determined that for a period of 10 years beginning April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not participate, in person or virtually, in any Academy event or program, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”

Rubin and Hudson also thanked Rock for saying so still in progress what happened because he “maintained his composure in extraordinary circumstances”.

They said the academy’s decision to ban Smith was “a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests and restoring trust in the academy.”

The slap that sent shockwaves through Hollywood came after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife. Rock said he’s looking forward to a GI Jane sequel starring Jada Pinkett Smith, which is a nod to her shaved head. Pinkett Smith has spoken publicly about losing her hair to autoimmune disease alopecia.

Smith then took to the stage and punched Rock before returning to his seat and yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.” Rock declined to press charges, and the LAPD took no action against Smith, although the incident has sparked intense public debate as to whether his actions were justified.

Smith’s decision to step down came days after the academy announced it formal review initiated in his behaviourwhich included “inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and endangering the integrity of the Academy.”

Though it’s possible the academy could take that back He won an Oscar for “King Richard” shortly after the slap, Whoopi Goldberg, who serves on the academy’s board of governors, said they would not strip him of the award.
